February Birthstone: Amethyst
Chemical Makeup: SiO2
A variety of the Quartz mineral, Amethyst is said to have been a pure white crystal until Bacchus threw his wine onto it in Greek mythology. As a consequence, amethyst was often associated with sobriety and was kept as a talisman to produce a clear mind.
The stone is also associated with Saint Valentine, from Christian tradition. The entire month of February is dedicated to the patron saint of love, culminating in the celebration of Valentine's Day on February 14th.
We love the violet color of amethyst, which can range from the rosy pink variety to a darker eggplant, depending on the iron content of the specimen.
