January Birthstone: Garnet
Although most commonly recognized as a red stone, garnet can actually form in a variety of different colors. The classic blood red is most traditional, but we also love the deep orange of Spessartine garnet, the bright green of Tsavorite, Uvarovite, and Demantoid garnets, the purple-tinged pink of Rhodolite garnet, and even the bicolored Hydrogrossular garnet. Each displays a rich full bodied color, enhanced with a subtle warmth when worn against the skin.
In the 1500's, a large amount of garnet deposits were found in Bohemia, which supplied Europe with many beautiful specimens and their trade flourished. As a result, garnet jewelry has remained quite popular in Europe.
