Pearl: CaCO₃

Once called the “teardrop of the moon” the pearl is the oldest known gem.  Unlike all of the other birthstones, the pearl is not actually a stone but rather an organic material that grows in mollusks.  Legends abound about the pearl; The ancient Egyptians so prized their pearls that they were buried with them; The Chinese believed they were a symbol of wisdom; the Japanese thought they were calcified mermaid tears; The Persians held that pearls were created when rainbows hit the earth after storms.  No matter the folklore, it is clear that pearls have inspired adoration and infatuation throughout history. Today the pearl is believed to lend wisdom through experience. Also thought to be a stone of balance, the pearl can calm us and lend to us purity, generosity and kindness. A stone rich in history and positivity, the Pearl definitely merits its Indian name, the “Divine Mother”.
